In the Lens

This week I went on a day trip to nearby Lincoln, avec boyfriend.  The sun was out, and I came armed with a camera to snap the best of the historic English city’s nooks and crannies…

Lincoln is set on a hill, and to reach its old centre (away from a very tempting Topshop) you have to climb Steep Hill, which, surprisingly, is very steep.

What I love about places outside London are the very quaint and authentic independent boutiques, like this country outfitters. Its shop window could indicate a Jack Wills branch, but it’s the real British deal.

The cobbled thoroughfare of Steep Hill was filled to the brim with wine, fudge and cake shops, tea rooms and niche retailers. Some, appeared a little too specialist (above), until we realised they stocked too much of the vino for a respectable man of the law.

Apart from its architectural, provincial charm, there is a rich back story to Steep Hill. The street is the traditional home of Lincoln’s Jewish community, and the building (above), dating from 1150, houses the oldest British synagogue.  A thousand years later, it remains a place of worship and a bookshop.

An outstanding example of gothic architecture, looking at Lincoln Cathedral can never get dull. It was the tallest building in the world for 238 years…take that Dubai.

The cathedral took 126 years to build, and I couldn’t help thinking how much has happened in the last 126 years…
